Hope you all had a wonderful mother’s day. I’ve really been appreciating my own mother lately and wanted to give her a shout-out. She was raised by immigrant parents who worked well beyond full-time as dressmakers. As the 3rd of 5 children, it often fell to her to cook meals, tend to the house, and take care of her own needs upon arriving at an empty home each day after school. She wore clothing made in my grandparents’ shop, unable to afford the cool fashions donned by her peers, and spent a lot of time working in the shop herself. She didn’t have anyone to provide her with piano lessons, help with homework, or the simple pleasure of coming home to a house smelling of fresh-baked cookies. One summer, her parents took their family on a trip to Canada to visit relatives, and they stayed on a farm and ate only potatoes and cherries for weeks.
