Funny how life take its twists and turns, and you find yourself reconnecting with people from your past. Nearly ten years ago, I took a mom-tot class with one of my boys and really enjoyed getting to know one of the other moms in the class, a nurse named Stacy Goldberg. Our kids wound up at different schools and we lost touch, but as Stacy’s nutrition-based business, Savorfull, grew in the ensuing years, I always enjoyed following her in the local media. She, in turn, happened upon KALEandKANT last fall and wrote me a really nice email.
Stacy suggested that given my interests and the fact that I was dealing with food allergies at home, I consider sampling one of her “Free From” Specialty boxes, a monthly subscription service that delivers to your door a boxful of foods to try that are free of allergens, artificial colors, dyes, sweeteners and HFCS.
I just received the box, and I have to say, I loved it. Bad news is, my kids tore through it so quickly that I didn’t have time to fully photograph its contents, so I’ll just briefly describe a couple of them. If you visit savorfull.com, you can browse all of the other products that Stacy ships in her monthly boxes, and check out her blog for some great recipes and nutrition info.
The biggest hit were single-serve packets of sunbutter by a company just called Sunbutter. They are the perfect high-protein and nutrient-dense nut-free snack for kids to throw into their bags for school, sports, or trips. Even if you don’t suffer with nut allergies, sunbutter is a great substitute in places where PB is banned for health reasons.
Another hit was a Grape Nuts knock-off called Crunchy Flax Cereal (by Enjoy Life). I think anyone would love this yummy, crunchy cereal whether on a GF diet or not. I was especially delighted that my youngest son, Jack, liked it since his various allergies really restrict what he can eat, and every time I find a new fun food that’s safe for him, he feels that much less deprived.
It can be a challenge tracking down healthful, allergen-free products, but Savorfull makes it that much easier.
